The company has industrial and logistics units located in five states of the country and is present throughout the steel chain – from ore ewxtraction, through steel production to its transformation into products and ca­ pital goods. Today, it has the largest and most innovative Re­ search and Development Center for steelmaking in Latin America. The advance registered by the steel­ maker in recent years ensures innovation, technology and quality in all production lines, and allows the com­ pany to offer the market a diversified portfolio, with an emphasis on high value-added products and services. In the automotive sector, Usiminas’ operations are focused on steels with greater mechanical resis­ tance, which allow for a reduction in the weight of cars through the use of plates with less thickness and equal or superior performance in the car’s struc­ ture. In addition to high mechanical strength, they are also aimed at steels that require high energy absorption capacity, thus contributing to more protection for pas­ sengers during an eventual collision. Due to its environmental management, Usiminas was the second steelmaker in the world certified with ISO14001, generating greater productivity with less consumption. The company also contributes to the development of the communities where it operates, through the Usiminas Institute and the São Francisco Xavier Foundation (FSFX), offering projects in the areas of health, education, culture, sports and social develop­ ment.
